Replacement Brakes for a Dexter 7,000 lbs Axle

Question:

Hello, I have two dexter axles on my trailer “P12, Model SLR, SN D 7198686” I am looking for the brakes as well as completely rebuilding the bearings and seals. Would you be able to guide me on what the right parts I would need ? Brakes say “PR-FF, SEC-FF, 12x2 DXQ 36-89”

The brake assemblies you have are Dexter assemblies that are 12 inch by 2 inch in size. There should be a number after the FF that will tell you what size brakes they are. If you can't identify any numbers you will want to replace them with the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 12" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 7,000 lbs item # 23-180-181. The 12" x 2" driver's-side and passenger's-side electric trailer brake assemblies fit 7,000-lb axles. The mounting flanges have a 5-bolt pattern. These brake assemblies fit 14.5" to 16" wheels.

I contacted Dexter. You have an axle that was made in their Indiana location in 2001 and they were not able to give me any information about what bearings you need. You will need to pull one of your hubs and measure the bearings. The best way to measure the bearings is to use a precise measuring tool like the 4" Carbon Fiber Digital Caliper item # PTW80157 and measure the inner diameter of both bearings. I have included a diagram that will show you the dimensions you will need to find.
