Transmission Cooler for 2002 Chevy Silverado 1500HD

Question:

Your guys site is awesome. I can honestly say that I really trust the information you all provide. I have a 2002 Chevy Silverado 1500 HD 4x4 with the 6.0l gas engine and the 4l80e transmission. When I tow up a steep grade my transmission gets pretty hot. I’d like to keep the temperature on it down - what’s the best way to do that? A trans cooler? A larger capacity transmission pan cover? Any advice you can provide would be much appreciated!

Thanks for your kind words!

I'd recommend going with a transmission cooler.

Unless you live in a far northern location that has freezing temperatures most of the year, we typically recommend going with the largest transmission cooler that will fit in the available space on the front of your radiator directly behind the grille. I'd recommend the Derale # D13504 which measures 11x12 inches which would provide plenty of cooling. If you have 5/8 inch hex fittings on your transmission lines, you'll also need the # D13018 fitting kit which will eliminate the need to cut and flare lines.

I'll link to some help articles that explain how transmission coolers work.
