Brake Controller Works When Brake is Activated but Trailer Brakes Do Not Work

Question:

All trailer lights work and the brake activator controller light shines when brake is pushed but the trailer brakes do not seem to be working. Suggestions on how to trouble shoot the problem?

I would start by using a circuit tester such as part # PTW2993 on the brake output pin on the trailer connector while activating the override switch, to see if you are getting any output at the connector. If this checks out, probe the brake output wire just before it reaches the brake assembly. This will verify that the power is reaching the brakes. We have a brake controller testing video for you to review, see link.

There are a few other problems that might be causing your problem. The brakes might need adjustment, or the brake magnets or pads might be shot and in need of replacing. The brake drums might need resurfacing, as well.

If you pull off the drum and you can see the copper magnet windings exposed, the magnets will need replacing.

To adjust the brakes, jack up the trailer and secure on adequate capacity jack stands. Follow trailer manufacturers recommendations for lifting and supporting the unit. Check that the wheel and
drum rotate freely. Do not lift or support trailer on any part of the axle or the suspension system.
Remove the adjusting hole cover from the adjusting slot on the bottom of the brake backing plate.
With a screwdriver or standard adjusting tool, rotate the star-wheel of the adjuster assembly to expand the brake shoes. Adjust the brake shoes out until the pressure of the linings against the drum makes the wheel difficult to turn. Then rotate the star-wheel in the opposite direction until the wheel turns freely with a slight lining drag. Replace the adjusting hole cover and lower the wheel to the ground. Repeat the above procedure on all brakes.
