Can a 2004 Dodge Ram SLT 4x4 Tow a 6500 Pound 2006 Nomad Trailer
Question:
I am looking into purchasing a 2006 Nomad M2930 with a weight of 6500. I am wondering if my 2004 Dodge Ram SLT 4x4 extended cab short box 4.7 liter engine would be able to tow that weight safely. I have looked on the dodge website but am unable to translate which one is my truck for determining the maximum weight I can haul. Any information you could give me would be very much appreciated.

From what I was able to find, the 2004 Dodge Ram SLT 4x4 has a standard towing capacity of 4,500 pounds. But when used with weight distribution the maximum towing capacity is 8,950 pounds. You might want to confirm this by contacting a Dodge dealer.
To tow your 6,500 pound trailer you will need to use weight distribution. You will choose a system based on the tongue weight of the trailer when loaded and ready to tow and then adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.
For sake of argument, lets say that the trailer weighs 6,500 pounds loaded and ready to tow and nothing is in the truck bed. Typically, tongue weight is 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. That would be 650 to 975 pounds. But your truck is limited to 895 pounds. Based on these weights I recommend a system rated for 600 to 1,200 pounds tongue weight to cover the entire range.
For a weight distribution system by itself I recommend # RP66022. You would need to add a shank with the appropriate drop, see link, to tow the trailer level. You will also need a properly sized ball for the coupler. Use # A-90 for a 2 inch ball or # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch ball.
You can also add dual-cam sway control to this system using # RP26002. Given the size and weight of the trailer I do recommend adding the sway control.
You would also benefit from a supplemental transmission and engine oil cooler. A combination cooler like # D15902 will handle both functions. Adding coolers will lessen the stress on the transmission and engine. I have linked some FAQs on coolers and weight distribution for you.
