Towing 4000 Pound Trailer With 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 2WD

Question:

I own a 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 2wd. 5.3, auto and need to set it up to tow a 18ft tandem axle open trailer approx. 1900 lbs. My max trailer weight loaded should be about 4,000 pounds. Its obviously an older vehicle and I want to tow as safely as I can on the hwy. Would you recommend airbags or a weight distribution system? Or both Thank you,

Helpful Expert Reply:

I recommend getting the RoadActive Suspension Custom Leaf Spring Enhancement Kit - Heavy Duty # RAS54FR. These will help with load level and sway.

I recommend the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control - Round - 6,000 lbs GTW, 600 lbs TW # FA94-00-0600. With a trailer that size and weight I do not see you having any major sway problems so this 2 point sway control coupled with the RoadActive Suspension will handle any issues you have.

Make sure you keep your tongue weight to 10-15% of your trailer weight and do not exceed your hitch tongue weight or towing capacity.

Also check your owners manual and verify the capacities of the truck as well so you do not cause any damage to anyone or anything.
