Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2012 Ram 1500 Sport With Factory Tow Package

Question:

I have 2012 Ram 1500 Sport, Crew Cab, 4wd. The truck has the factory installed tow package and the bumper states 5000 lb max trailer weight and 500 lb max tongue weight. I am looking at a camper that has a 6000lb dry weight with a hitch weight of 800+. Is it feasible to install a Class 4 hitch? Thanks for the help.

You can install a different hitch on your 2012 Ram 1500 as long as you remove the factory hitch. For a heavy duty hitch I recommend the Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver w/ Cast Center # 41948.

This is a Class V hitch with a maximum gross trailer weight of 12,000 lbs and tongue weight of 1,500 lbs. It has a 2" receiver and a bolt-on installation. This will be more than enough for your camper but remember, you will be limited by the towing capacity of your truck.
