Can I Drill Holes in the Trunx # TRX34FR to Accomodate a 38.5 Inch Bar Spread?

Question:

I have a fixed rail roof rack on my Coleman Pop-Up. The distance between the fixed round rails center to center is approx. 38.5 inches. I am looking at the TRX34FR Cargo Carrier mounting system, can the mounting hardware be drilled to 38.5 inches so I can install it to my Pop-Up. The installed roof rack rails are for our bikes and its a Yakima Roof Rack.

I have cargo solution for you. While it may technically work to drill holes for the mounting hardware of the Trunx Cargo Carrier # TRX34FR, the manufacturer does not recommend drilling holes to accommodate a crossbar spread over 31 inches. Since we do not know the exact Yakima crossbars you have on your roof rack, the Trunx carrier will clamp around the bars as long as they do not exceed 3-3/4" wide x 1-3/16" tall. I recommend measuring the height and width of your crossbars to make sure the hardware will clamp around your bars.

For a drill-free and less riskier option, I recommend the Yakima SkyBox 18 Rooftop Cargo Box - 18 cu ft # Y07336. This particular cargo box will fit a maximum crossbar spread of 42 inches. Also, you get a higher quality box with adjustable clamps and same-key locks.
