Should Tekonsha Voyager Brake Controller Send 12V Power to Trailer At All Times

Question:

By following the wire diagram Should the blue brake wire on the vehicle trailer connector be hot at all times? even with the vehicle key off? My RV has an existing Tekonsha Voyager brake control

Expert Reply:

The blue wire from your Tekonsha Voyager Trailer Brake Controller # 39510 should only be hot when you press the brake pedal or use the manual override. You may see a pulse of power on the pin for the trailer brake power as the brake controller is checking to see when the trailer is connected, but it won't be a constant 12V power.

If you are seeing constant 12V power on that blue wire then you may have some of the wiring installed incorrectly or the brake controller may be shot. If the constant power is only found at the 7-Way connector itself then you'll want to inspect the wiring for any damage or splayed wires where power might be jumping from the 12V power pin over to the trailer brake pin.
