Parts Needed To Transfer A Roadmaster InvisiBrake From A 2012 Jeep Liberty To A Jeep Grand Cherokee

Question:

Hi! My Wife is considering trading her 2012 Jeep Liberty for a 2020 - 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee probably Summit or Overland with all the protective skid plates. Will our Invisi brake transfer to the new Grand? I know I have to buy the Roadmaster base plate to use with our existing RoadMaster tow bar. According to owners manual we I need to disconnect the negative battery cable on a Grand. Why - since invisibrake charges the battery. What wiring do I need to add to the Grand Cherokee?

To swap your Roadmaster InvisiBrake # RM-8700 into your new 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee you'll want the Second Vehicle Kit for Roadmaster InvisiBrake Braking System # RM-98700. This is going to include everything you need to complete the transfer to you Jeep.

You'll also want the Roadmaster Stop Light Switch Kit # RM-751449 to ensure proper operation of your system.

If your owner's manual states to remove the negative battery cable it's typically to prevent harm to components of your vehicle which would otherwise be activated and could be damaged. You will want to ensure you follow all rules listed in your owner's manual to ensure a safe trip. From what I can find the 2020 and 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee's do not require the battery to be disconnected but it's always best to follow the manual.

You will need to buy a new base plate for your Jeep, the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit # RM-521440-5 you were looking at will be compatible with your Roadmaster tow bar and is a fit for Grand Cherokees, excluding SRT-8 and Trailhawk models. It has removable arms to provide a clean factory look when not in use.

You'll also need a tow bar wiring kit to transfer your motorhome's braking and turn signals to the Jeep. For this I recommend the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 4-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15247. This diode kit allows you to use your Jeep Grand Cherokee's tail lights and wiring system while preventing feedback from your RV.

Note: If you have ParkSense Proximity Sensors then you'll need the Roadmaster Wiring Kit with Smart Diodes for Variable Voltage LED Tail Lights # RM47ZR along with the Roadmaster 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Kit # RM-146-7.

If you need safety cables then I recommend the RoadMaster 68" Single Hook, Coiled Safety Cables # RM-643. The coiled design will help prevent them from dragging on the ground and being damaged.

You may also require a high/low adapter to keep your tow bar level between the motorhome and and Jeep. This does require some measuring so I've attached one of our help articles to help you determine the correct rise/drop for your application.

Below you'll find some videos for each of these items that will help you with the installation. I also verified that each of these parts will work for both the 2020 and 2021 model years. If you choose a different year and model just let me know and I can find the correct parts for you.
