Thule Tram Ski Carrier for 2007 Mazda 5

Question:

I learned from a local dealer of Thule racks that there was a previous version of the ski rack that customers werent satisfied with so it was redesigned. Is this accurate or was this salesman giving me a story? Can you confirm that the TH9033 is the most recent and best functioning ski/snowboard accessory that you offer? Thank you!

Thule did offer a previous version before their current offering, which they called the 987XT Ski Carrier. The new model became available a few years ago. The old carrier was well received by our customers, and I do not recall any specific problems or complaints associated with it.

The current model, the Thule Tram is compatible with current Thule Vertex or Apex regular or swinging models as well as the Parkway and Hitching Post Pro racks. The primary purpose for the redesign was to make the ski rack compatible with the newest Thule bike racks like the Vertex and Apex, not because of a defect.

As long as you have a compatible bike rack and your vehicle is equipped with a hitch, the Tram is an excellent choice. Thule also offers other methods of carrying skis and snowboards on the roof of your vehicle. A roof rack could be installed, constructed using parts # TH711200, TH460R and THKIT3080 which would provide an attachment point for a roof mounted ski/board carrier like the Thule SnowPack, part # TH7326.

Keep in mind, when used with a Class I hitch (like what would be found on your Mazda 5), the weight capacity of the hitch would limit you to carrying 4 pairs of skis or 2 snowboards on the carrier.

I have linked you to some product demonstration videos featuring the Tram ski rack you mentioned, plus the roof mounted options I mentioned above.
