How are the lids for the sockets kept closed? Are they spring loaded or do they snap closed?

The lid for the 7-way connector has a spring loaded hinge and the flexible rubber lid for the 4/5-way flat connector in on a non-spring loaded hinge and fits snugly around the connector plate.
