Understanding The Maximum Capacity Of A 5th Wheel Towing Set Up In A 2022 Ram 2500 Cummins Diesel

Question:

My wife and I just got a 2022 Ram 2500 long bed with the Cummins diesel in it so we can tow a fifth wheel trailer with. We don't have the trailer yet, but are in the process of searching. We are both recent retirees and will be towing pretty much full time, but we are new to this. I have pulled a few small trailers in my day, but nothing like this. I have been hearing good things about B&W hitches so I want to go with their Companion BWRVK3600 since it will fit into the factory puck/towing set up. However, I saw that this is rated to 25,000 pounds and 6,250 pounds. I am pretty sure this is more than our new truck is listed at. Should I be going off the weights of the hitch or the weights of the truck? Pretty sure I know, but wanted to make sure before I did something dumb. Thanks for your help.

From what I could find, your 2022 Ram 2500 with the Cummins diesel motor will have a capacity of 19,990 pounds towing and 3,910 pounds of max payload. Though the B&W Companion # BWRVK3600, which is American made and very highly recommended, is rated up to 25,000 pounds towing and 6,250 pounds of vertical load, you will be limited by the lowest rated components. Which in this case is the truck's capacities. This does not by any means mean that your truck is under powered or anything. The # BWRVK3600 is designed for use in a 2500 and 3500 Ram, so it is very heavy duty and robust. I currently do not pull a 5th wheel, but if I did, I would definitely use a B&W hitch.
