Removal of Old Adhesive and Dicor

Question:

I have a similar question about replacing the bulb gasket on a Forest River. I have ripped off the old one but it left the sticky surface and the old Dicor caulking which is very hard to remove. What is the best way to remove this sticky stuff in order to prepare a new surface for the new bulb gasket?

When installing new Rubber Wiper Seal and Bulb for RV Slide Out, # SR48FR, remove the old adhesive using a putty knife or other tool with an edge to scrap. If you use a metal tool sometimes heating it will assist in the scrapping and removal. The use of mineral spirits is frequently a good way to get the sealant’s adhesive to release.

Once your parts are replaced, if you reapply new sealant be certain to use the correct product. Self-leveling sealant is designed to level out as you apply it. The thick liquid slowly flows into a level position as gravity takes effect. This is particularly useful when sealing flat surfaces, something such as LaSalle Bristol XTRM Universal Self-Leveling Sealant, # 34427034145-1.

Non-sag sealant is designed to retain its shape as you apply it. The consistency of the liquid is thick but malleable enough to be easily applied without causing sagging or slumping. This is useful when sealing vertical surfaces. LaSalle Bristol XTRM Universal Non-Sag Sealant, # 344270341437-1.
