You don't need an adapter to go down in size you need a reducer. A reducer also allows you to keep more of your tongue weight capacity at 300 lbs on your 2021 Volkswagen ID 4 and your Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver item # C47JR. I recommend the Brophy Hitch Reducer 2" to 1-1/4" Trailer Hitch Receiver item # HT02. This will take your 2" class III receiver down to a 1 1/4" to accommodate the class I and II bike racks without losing half the capacity of your class III like you would with an adapter.
