Are 4Ply Bias Trailer Tires as Strong as 6 Ply Trailer Tires of the Same Size

Question:

I have 6 ply tires on my small pull behind motorcycle trailer. Would a 4 ply be a better tire to use when the total weight of trailer and gear is 300 pounds? Is the 4 play as tough against punctures as the 6 ply?

Expert Reply:

The higher the ply rating, the tougher a given tire size is going to be. I would stick with the tires that are recommended by the trailer manufacturer. A tire that is rated lower but the same size can wear out faster because of its lower capacity. Ideally you will want the tire capacity for an axle to meet or exceed the axle capacity (the capacity of the trailer does not increase if the tires exceed the axle capacity).

Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi rating as indicated on the tire. Because trailer tires are made with a thicker sidewall than passenger vehicle tires, if they are under inflated they will build up excessive heat and can fail. I have included a link to our FAQ on trailer tires for you.
