Reese 22K 5th Wheel Hitch Makes Noise During Starts and Stops

Question:

I got my hitch installed at the RV center where I bought my 5th Wheel, a Cyclone 4100 HD. When I stop sometimes, and start out sometimes, the 5th wheel seems to slide forward or backward, a little bit and makes a clunk sound. The RV center folks said it was sliding a little on the center bolt in the mounting legs which are labeled 22K REESE. It is not a hugh noise but still annoying. Is there a cushion cussion or some thing for this to make it not clunk so much?

There is a little play in the head where it mounts to the cross member. A little bit of noise is to be expected given the stresses involved in towing a 5th wheel trailer. There isnt a cushion that is made to prevent this from happening because a cushion would also limit the movement of the head.

Movement in the legs should not be occurring though if all 4 bolts are used (2 on each side) and they are torqued to specifications. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you. If your hitch was not assembled or installed correctly that could be the issue.

If the issue is actually a result of some pin movement in the jaws then one thing that will help with that and improve ride quality in general is an Air Ride pin box. To determine if there is one that will fit your trailer you will need to go by the pin box manufacturer and model number. This information should be on a plate or sticker on the pin box itself. I have included a link to an Air Ride pin box FAQ article for you.
