Troubleshooting Coach Steps That Won't Stay Open When The RV Door Is Closed

Question:

I have a LCI model 128980 COACH STEP that will not stay deployed even when the switch is activated to keep them out. It works for a few minutes and then they arbitrarily retract. I have replaced the batteries as they were 7 year old but it the step is still doing the same thing. The step switch on my coach operates the step light as well as keeping them out while the coach is parked with the ignition off. The light is working properly so I am suspecting it is NOT the switch.

I spoke with a Lippert Tech and the most likely cause is the switch but there is also a possibility that the control module is the issue. The wire and/or the magnets of the switch could be worn out enough to cause intermittent function like you've been experiencing. Even though the light is still working I recommend replacing the switch # LC301694 first as it's a quarter of the price of the module # LC301702. If that does not solve the issue then it is the control module causing the malfunction.
