Non-Roof Mount Single Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2013 Mercedes ML350
Question:
2013 Mercedes ML350 with 2-inch hitch. I cant reach the top of the vehicle without standing on something. Bike shop recommends a tray and advised me to stay away from the arm hold. However, what Ive seen sticks out too far, so to park in my garage I will have remove each time I use it. I only need to transport 1 bike. Any ideas? Thank you.

The decision between a platform bike rack and a hanging bike rack is mostly a matter of personal preference. Some people prefer the platform style because it is the best mounting style in eliminating bike to bike contact and damage. However, if you will only be carrying one bike this will not be a problem. When using a platform style bike rack you will not have to lift the bike up as far to securely mount it into the carrier. At this time we do not have a manufacturer that offers a single bike carrier.
Considering the clearance issues you indicated the best option for you is to use the platform style Swagman XTC-2 # S64670. This is intended to be used as a 2 bike carrier however if you are only needing to carry one bike then you can easily modify the assembly to accommodate a single bike. When configured for a single bike the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole would be approximately 18 inches to the outer rear edge of the bike rack.
With the Swagman XTC-2 platform bike rack there is no need for using an adapter bar (often needed with hanging-style carriers). the Swagman XTC-2 it is a wheel mount bike rack, and the wheel mounts are adjustable to accommodate many sizes of bikes. It can also be folded up while on the hitch if not being used.
Please note that the Swagman XTC-2 does not come with either a locking hitch pin, or a bike cable lock. To secure the bike rack to your vehicle, and the bike to the bike rack, I recommend the Swagman Anti-Rattle Hitch Lock and Cable for 2 inch receivers, part # S64030, that includes a cable to secure your bike to the carrier.
For a hanging style bike rack, that uses mounting arms you will have to lift the bike slightly higher to securely mount the bike on the carrier.
If you would prefer a hitch mounted hanging bike rack I would recommend the Kuat Beta for 2 inch hitches # B202-2. This lightweight aluminum rack extends 7-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole, and with the arms extended it is 25-3/4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the furthest point on the carrier. The narrow width of the bars is intended to reduce the need for an adapter bar to carry alternative-design, womens, or childrens bikes, however if you do need an adapter bar I recommend the Kuat Ubar Adapter Bar # UB01.
I have included links to the parts listed above as well as some videos for your reference.
