Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution # RP66073 Installation on a 2011 Nissan Titan SV 4X4 V8

Question:

I just purchased a 2011 KZ Spree 261RKS used. I think empty weight is 5700 pounds. The owner is including this: Reese - Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w Sway Control - Trunnion Bar. He also said that since it was setup for his GMC vehicle it would require a significant adjustment for use with my truck which is a 2011 Nissan Titan SV 4X4 V8. I thought I could simply put the shank he has into my receiver and crank the arms up using the chain lifts and be on the road. Can you confirm this adjustment is actually required? I am calling local RV service centers asking the same question and trying to find out what the cost would be or if I could do it myself. And if I could do it myself are there instructions available that you could point me to? Thank you.

The Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution system you reference, part # RP66073, is rated for a trailer tongue weight of 400-800 pounds and a gross towing weight of up to 10,000 pounds.
From my on-line research I found that the 2011 Nissan Titan has a maximum towing capacity of 7,400 pounds. You indicate that your trailer has a dry weight of 5700 pounds. However, I urge you to check the owners manuals of both your Nissan Titan and Spree trailer to verify this information is correct. When towing please make sure that you are not exceeding the towing capacity of the lowest rated component within your towing system.

Please note that you will need to account for not just the gross weight of the trailer when it is fully loaded, but also the fully loaded tongue weight. A weight distribution system must be closely matched to the actual fully-loaded trailer tongue weight in order to function properly.

To determine both the gross trailer weight and tongue weight of your towing system, I would suggest loading your trailer with all cargo and supplies just as it will be when towed and weighing the entire system. This should be done to make sure that you are not exceeding the towing limitations of your Nissan Titan. You will need to weigh your system at a scale that you can fit both your truck and trailer completely on and determine the weight of your truck and trailer as well as the weight of only your truck. Then you can subtract the weight of the truck only from the total weight of the truck and trailer and that will give you the gross weight of your trailer. I have included a helpful article further explaining how to obtain these measurements. If you would like there is also a tongue weight scale that we offer and it is part # 5780; this will help you determine the tongue weight of your trailer when fully loaded.

Keep in mind that the actual tongue weight that is exerted on the hitch includes the trailer tongue weight plus the weight of all cargo and equipment in the Titan that is carried behind the rear axle.

I would suggest taking a few minutes with both your truck and trailer available and make sure that you have everything set up specifically for your towing combination before using your weight distribution system. You might need to make adjustments to both the angle and elevation of the weight distribution head. These adjustments can be done using the bolt and nut assembly that features the serrated washer system. Please make sure that the teeth on the washers and the mounting surface line up properly.

The mounting locations for the lift brackets that use chains to hold the trunnion bars in place need to be approximately 30 inches from the hitch ball, and require 5-1/2 inches of space along the trailer frame. Please note that these brackets are intended for 2 inch by 2 inch trailer hitch receivers, but do not fit trailer frames that are wider than 2-1/2 inches. As noted in the included video at approximately the 6 minute mark, there are two options for mounting the sway control mounting brackets.

After you have made these adjustments your Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution system will be tuned specifically to your vehicle and trailer, not the previous owners towing set up. You can hook up to your trailer and make small modifications necessary for the chain lengths and get on the road with your weight distribution system.

I have included the instructions for the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System, several helpful articles, and an installation video of a very similar product for your reference.
