e-Bike Rack to Fit with Honda Ridgeline OEM Hitch Receiver and Flat Towed Vehicle

Question:

I would like to use this rack for two Specialized Como ebikes. Both 55-60 #’s. One is low entry. Both have fenders. I have two vehicles I would like to mount it on. The first is a 2020 Honda Ridgeline with a 2” factory hitch. Weight rating is 600#. The issue I see is the hitch pin distance. It is 1 1/4 center to face of hitch. I see in the literature this needs to be 1 1/2” min. How critical is this? The second vehicle is a 2020 Ford Escape with a Curt 2” class 3 hitch. I flat tow this vehicle behind a motor home. I see that it is ok for mounting to a motor home but indicates not to use for a flat tow vehicle. Could you explain? I love the features on this rack but if can’t be used, what would be best alternative?

The reason that the Thule EasyFold XT # TH903202 needs at least that 1-1/2" clearance has more to do with leverage than anything. Since you don't have enough clearance I would avoid going with this rack. In all honesty you would probably be just fine with the flat towing part, but Thule has deemed that a vehicle being flat towed has too much movement which is why that rating exists. They've also stated it's not to be used with motorhomes either, by the way.

A great alternative is the Yakima OnRamp # Y36FR which is rated for 66 lbs per bike, comes with a ramp, and is rated for use on a flat towed vehicle. The only issue here is that distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the face of the hitch because this requires at least 1-1/2" as well.

I would say that the best option is to use an aftermarket hitch on your 2020 Honda Ridgeline but it doesn't look like any are available so you can either load the bikes up in your truck bed or you could potentially install a front mount hitch like the Curt # C31082 to get around this situation so you can safely use this bike rack with your Ridgeline.
