Should I Change My 5 On 5.5 Wheel Bolt Pattern To Something More Common?
Question:
I have a utility trailer that needs tires/rims. The existing wheels are 15 with 5 on 5.5 lug spacing. Options seem limited for this lug spacing. Am I better off changing the hubs to something more common?

With the options being as limited as they are for the 5 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern, I do recommend changing to something more common, specifically the 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. This is very widely available and it will not only give you more options for wheel design, it will also be significantly easier to replace if ever needed. The only drawback to doing this is that you will indeed need to replace your hubs to get the new wheels attached.
The vast majority of hubs that used the 5 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern were for 3,500 pound axles that used Dexter's #84 spindle with the # L68149 inner bearing and # L44649 outer bearing, but I highly recommend either checking with the trailer manufacturer or by pulling one off to make sure of which your trailer has. If your bearings match, you will need the # AKIHUB-545-35-EZ-K if you do not have brakes, or the # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K if you do have brakes. Both of these come pre-greased and with the 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern.
With that out of the way, you will have a bunch of tire and wheel options. If you are looking for corrosion resistance, I highly recommend the Kenda Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" Aluminum Wheel # AM32404. I like the design of this wheel and with it being aluminum, it will not rust. The radial tire is also rated up to 1,820 pounds at 50 psi and has an M speed rating, or 81 mph. Definitely a good option.
If you were looking for something less expensive, I can also highly recommend the Kenda Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" Black Mod Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - LR C # AM32238B. This will have the same weight and speed ratings, but will be a steel wheel with a powder coat finish. This will have good corrosion resistance as well, but not quite as good as aluminum. I am a big fan of both mod wheels and black wheels, so this is one that I really do like.
