What is Needed to Install Curt Echo Brake Controller in 2016 Honda CR-V
Question:
I was considering the Redarc Tow Pro Elite brake controller OR the Curt bluetooth #C51180 - still deciding but is there any way that I dont have to have the 4 way wires running outside the back hatch of the CR-V to a 7 pin? Im going back and forth between installing brake controller like the Redarc #RED44FR and the Curt Brake Controller #C51180. If I go with the bluetooth and dont have a towing package no 4 pin or 7 pin, what are the other kits that I need. I was planning to have U-Haul install, but Im trying to save some money by ordering the parts. Of course, I will check with them, but if I were setting up my Honda with Curt what are the other best items I need. I do have a hitch receiver and researching the drawbars and ball mounts, but Im more interested in what other electrical kits are needed beside the Curt Bluetooth Brake Controller. Is there any way that a 4 way can be installed that wont show or have the wires exposed. Thank you

Good questions, and let's start with the wiring and where it will mount on your 2016 Honda CR-V, and it will indeed be exposed outside your vehicle. The 4-way is actually just going to be plugged into the 7-way, and the 7-way is what will show and mount on your CR-V's hitch. The 7-way needs to be outside your CR-V in order to have the wires properly run to it. Most people really aren't going to notice it if you were concerned about aesthetic, and the wiring won't be in danger of being damaged as it is designed to be outside of your vehicle so it is well protected.
As for the brake controller, between the Redarc and Curt, I highly recommend the Curt Echo # C51180 because it is the easiest brake controller to use. The reason the Echo is so simple is because it is controlled with an app on your smartphone, and will simply plug into the 7-way with no additional wiring necessary. This means no bulky unit in your cab, saving you precious space and the hassle of having to drill under your dash to mount it.
You will also need a 4-way and 7-way brake controller install kit; for a 4-way the best option is the Tekonsha # 118561 as we have found over time that they make the most reliable trailer wiring harnesses. The exact parts you need for your '16 CR-V are the following:
- Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # C51180
- T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118561
- 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation # ETBC7L
