Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 1998 Subaru Legacy
Question:
I have towbar mounts for a 2002 Subaru forester. Can the mount I have be used for the 1998 legacy, or what additional parts do I need? Thank you

The tow bar mounts, or base plates, that you currently have for your 2002 Subaru Forester will not fit on your 1998 Subaru Legacy, but we do have a kit that will work.
Your current base plates are the Roadmaster XL Base Plates, # 909-9. For your 1998 Subaru Legacy, you can use the Roadmaster XL Base Plates, # 909-3, if you have the L, 2.5 GT or the 2.5 GT Limited. If you have the Outback Edition, you want the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit, # BX3604.
The Roadmaster base plate kit is compatible with your tow bar so you will not need any additional parts with them. However, for the Blue Ox you'll likely need adapters. Check out the article I've attached so you can look up your tow bar to find the correct adapter.
If you need a light kit, safety cables and a supplemental braking system for your Legacy, then I can make some recommendations for those parts.
For safety cables, I recommend the Roadmaster 6,000 lb Safety Cables, # RM-643. These will be strong enough to handle your Legacy in the event the tow bar comes off of the hitch ball.
For a light kit, I recommend the Magnetic LED Tow Lights, # TLL21RK. These lights are easy to setup and remove when you are on the road.
Finally, you will need a supplemental braking system if you do not already have one. Most states now require a braking system be used when flat towing. The Roadmaster Even Brake System, # RM-9400, is easy to set up and use and, like the magnetic tow lights, can be transferred to more than one vehicle if you plan on towing different vehicles on different trips.
