Permanently Removing Brakes from a Boat Trailer and Immobilizing the Actuator
Question:
I have a 1989 ranger trailer and looking to eliminate the brakes. The lines are already gone but the hitch slides back and forth. what are my options

More than likely the reason you are having issues with your hitch sliding back and forth is that your coupler is still articulating. To stop it from articulating there are a few options. You can do so by drilling holes in either side and sliding a bolt through to prevent the coupler from compressing or you can weld the coupler to prevent it from moving. You can always remove the coupler and replace it with a coupler like the Demco Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler # DM13203-95 (this is a very common size, but you'd want to confirm what you need). If you go the route of changing out your coupler you would just want to make sure you replace it with one of the proper capacity for the weight of your trailer and boat.
Another thing to keep in mind is depending on the weight of the boat and trailer, operating the trailer on public roads without brakes might not be legal. You'll want to check with your local Highway Patrol or State Police to confirm you will still be within the law.
