Recommended Flat Towing Equipment For A 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Question:

Thanks Kevin, one follow up question. I was looking at the HM 39494 mainly because of the cost difference. Would that work just as good?

Roadmaster products are a great choice to flat tow your 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee. To flat tow you'll need a tow bar, base plate, tow bar wiring kit, braking system, and safety cables. I have the following recommendations for you below:

Tow Bar: Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain, Non-Binding Tow Bar # RM-522. This tow bar features a non-binding design and large hookup radius to make connecting and disconnecting on any terrain a breeze.

Base Plate: Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms # 1427-3. These direct-connect base plates will make connecting to your tow bar extremely easy and the removable arms will provide a clean look when not in use.

Tow Bar Wiring Kit: Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267. This diode kit allows you to use your Jeep Grand Cherokee's tail lights and wiring system while preventing feedback from your RV.

Braking System: Brake Buddy Select 3 Portable Supplemental Braking System - Proportional # HM39524. This braking system offers intense, emergency braking or steady, smooth braking in a single portable system. Easily switch between proportional or full braking using the remote from your motorhome. The included charge line kit will keep your vehicle's battery charged while you tow so that you don't arrive at your destination and then have to deal with a dead battery.

The # RM-88400 relay is required to prevent the towed vehicle's brake signal from overriding the turn signal from the RV when applying the brakes during a turn.

Safety Cables: RoadMaster 68" Single Hook, Coiled Safety Cables - 6,000lbs # RM-643. The coiled design of these cables will help prevent them from dragging on the ground and being damaged.

You may also require a high/low adapter to keep your tow bar level. This will require some measuring on your part so i've attached our help guide article which will walk you through the process.

The difference between the Brake Buddy Select 3 Portable Supplemental Braking System - Proportional # HM39524 and the Brake Buddy Classic 3 Portable Supplemental Braking System # HM39494 is the ability to control the sensitivity and responsiveness of the internal inertia sensor. A low sensitivity requires intense stopping action from RV to activate brakes in towed car and a high sensitivity allows Brake Buddy to respond to even minimal slowing of the RV. The Select 3 also has a Full Braking option. When you select the full-braking mode the Brake Buddy will activate your towed car's brakes at the maximum preset intensity, regardless of how intensely your RV is decelerating. The full-braking setting is ideal for when you're towing a heavy truck or SUV, or if you're towing your car down a steep incline. By setting the power to a higher level, you can ensure that the momentum of your towed car won't cause it to push against your RV. Other than the ability to control the sensitivity and Full Braking option these two systems are identical. It really just comes down to your personal preference and what you feel would better suit the size of the vehicle you're towing and the terrain you'll be pulling through. Since you're pulling a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee you're in the lower to middle weight class so this feature really isn't needed unless you're going through steep inclines/declines.
