Recommended Tire Chains For A 2017 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro

Question:

Hello ETrailer! I am in the market for some tire chains for my 2017 4runner TRD Pro and I came across these: https://www.etrailer.com/Tire-Chains/Toyota/4Runner/2017/TC2828CAM.html?VehicleID=2017760999. I saw that they are 5.5mm and my truck manual states no bigger than 5mm so I wanted to reach out! Also, do these have adequate clearance for front and rear? The manual states rear only for chains but the video has them on both which is what I would like to do. Thanks so much for your time!

With your owner's manual for your 2017 Toyota 4Runner requiring 5mm (or smaller) chains, I cannot recommend going with the 5.5mm Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains # TC2828CAM. There is the potential for these to get caught on something while in use, which would be very bad. However, I do have 2 other options that I do recommend.

First is the Konig Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains # TH01594267. This has 5mm links and will be a better option. The diamond pattern to the chains also offers very good traction and better tire coverage than the standard ladder design. One of the huge pluses with these is that they are self tensioning. All you have to do with these is put them on and drive away, making them a lot easier than other options.

For a less expensive option, the Titan Chain Alloy Snow Tire Chains # TC2326 will have a 3.7mm chain as well as the diamond pattern. These will need to be tightened by hand before driving away, but are still a good option.

There is typically more clearance in the rear wheel well and chains work better when installed on the drive wheels, hence the recommendation of not installing on front wheels. With the owner's manual saying not to install them on the front, you will be required to mount them on the rear.

As always with tire chains, I highly recommend doing a test fit at some point before leaving on a trip. This will make installing them if/when they are needed a lot easier as you will be familiar with how they fit your tires.
