How To Adjust Brakes When The Shoes Are Too Far Apart To Get A Drum Back On

Question:

I had to replace a seal on a big Tex gooseneck. It has drum brakes so I had to pound the drum off with a sledgehammer and now I’m trying to get it back on and avoid pounding it back on with a sledgehammer. So how do I adjust the brakes, we’ll back them off so the drum slides on easier?

The Dexter Self-Adjusting Brakes you have ( # 23-450-451) can actually be adjusted when removing and reinstalling, so you will not have to use a sledge hammer again.

You will need to go to the back side of the brake to get access to the adjuster, which I included a picture of for reference. Using a slot screwdriver, or a brake adjuster spoon like the # W80630 if you have one, you will need to back it off a little at a time until the drum slides on.

I also included an article that has a video on how to do this as it will help.
