Will Weight Distribution and Sway Control Help a 2007 Toyota Sequoia tow 3100 lb Boat Trailer

Question:

Towing my 2000lbempty boat on 1100lb tandem axle trailer with 2007 Toyota Sequoia V8.Rated for 6500lbs towing capacity. Factory tow package. Would a weight distribution hitch and anti sway help? I have surge brakes on the trailer. Is an anti sway system that is not friction based, a better bet? Thanks

Anytime your overall trailer weight is more than 50 percent of the total capacity of the tow vehicle weight distribution is recommended. Since your boat empty is close to that I would imagine that you would benefit using weight distribution.

When picking out a weight distribution system the most important factor to consider is the loaded tongue weight of the setup. Check out the FAQ article I attached that shows how to determine this. It is very important that you determine this when you are totally loaded and ready to go.

There are several weight distribution systems that are confirmed to work with surge brakes. I attached a link to a page that has all of these systems. Actually all of the anti-sway systems that will work with surge brakes are friction based and would work well for you.

Once you know what your loaded tongue weight is you will know what systems would work. Or, you can email me back with that figure and I will help you pick one out.

The Reese Weight Distribution # RP66561 that you referenced has tongue weight rating range of 700-1,400 lbs and would most likely be too high of a range for you. This system would be ideal for a setup with about a 1,200 lb tongue weight.
