Weld On Safety Chain Retainer
Question:
I have an 18 foot trail master trailer for a handmade wooden boat that weighs less than 200 pounds. My local trailer/RV shop insisted that the safety chains be welded directly to the trailer, i.e. the chain loop welded directly on the trailer. He likewise insisted this was required by law. Everything I’ve read seems to Indicate welding will weaken the chain-link it is not necessary or recommended. What is the right answer?

Expert Reply:
You should not weld the chain directly to the trailer. There is no federal law about weight or size rating on safety chains. You will need to check with your local DMV office for the requirements in your state. If you are needing a mounting point for safety chains I recommend the Buyers Products Weld-On Safety Chain Retainer For 5/16" Chain item # 3375471000. It has a removable clevis pin for ease of painting and chain replacement. Each retainer is rated to 10,000 lbs. They are sold individually.
