I would be happy to help you set up your 2018 BMW X5 35D with both a 7-way and a brake controller. Lets start with the 7-way. We will need two separate parts to get your BMW set up with a 7-way harness. The first part you will need is a Curt Powered Tail Light Converter Kit with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C56190KIT. This kit provides you with a 4-flat connector that powers the trailer's stop, turn, tail and running lights directly from the tow vehicle's battery. The second part you will need is a Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires item # ETBC7. This adapter connects to the 4-flat from the Curt kit and also has separate wires that are ran to the battery, ground, an auxiliary power source, and brake controller to provide the rest of your 7-way connection.
For your brake controller I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 3 Axles - Proportional item # RED44FR. This is a proportional brake controller that activates trailer brakes in proportion to your vehicle's braking action. The controller automatically adjusts trailer's braking based on the deceleration of the tow vehicle and activates immediately. There is no pausing like with time-delayed brake controllers.
