Recommended Electric Trailer Brake Controller For a 2013 Mazda CX-5
Question:
Looking for an inexpensive electronic brake controller that will be fairly easy to install into a 2013 Mazda CX-5. I prefer not to have to cut and splice but I can do it if need be. I am pulling a 2020 Viking Express Series 9.0 that does have electric brakes and is well within the limits of my CX-5. Since it is fitted with electric brakes Id like to take advantage of them. I don't think I need a proportional controller, I think that is overkill for the amount I use the trailer. I already pull the trailer with a 4 pin wiring harness but Id like the extra braking.

The simplest route for you to add a brake controller to your 2013 Mazda CX-5 is going to be using a Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # C51180. This will plug into a 7-way blade trailer connector on your Mazda and allow the trailer 7-way to connect to it. This saves you from having to splice into the wiring for your brake switch and running additional wiring to power the controller and the signal wire that would need to be ran to the trailer. You will need a smart phone to control this brake controller.
We have the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit # ETBC7L which provides you with wiring to the battery on your Mazda that will power the Curt Echo as well as a 7-way that you can connect to your 4-way flat connector for all the trailer lights to still work with your connection. Having the 7-way will also will also charge your trailer battery from your Mazda if you like to do dry camping with no power. You will be able to recharge the trailer battery for using the radio and lights when you want.
