Brake Controller Recommendation for 2006 International CXT Towing Multiple Trailers

Question:

I have a 2006 International CXT with air brakes. I tow trailers with electric drum brakes and boat trailers with hydraulic surge brakes. What type of controller should I use?

You have a number of brake controllers that will allow you to control your trailer brakes when towing with your 2006 International CXT. One thing to keep in mind is that boat trailers with surge brakes will either have an actuating coupler or an electric-over-hydraulic actuator which allows the hydraulic brakes to be controlled by a brake controller in the tow vehicle. A brake controller will only control the brakes on your boat trailers if they have an electric-over-hydraulic actuator.

The Hayes Air Utility Brake Control, # HA100400C, that you referenced will allow you to control the electric brakes on your trailers, however, it is not compatible with electric-over-hydraulic actuators, so it would not work with your boat trailers and may not be the best option for you. The installation is also quite involved and requires that you tap into your airlines and provide your own 3-way tees, tubing and possibly double check valves from the truck manufacturer.

Instead, I recommend looking at a brake controller like the Prodigy P3 Brake Controller, # 90195. This brake controller is compatible with electric-over-hydraulic systems and is very easy to use and set up. You can install this unit on your truck using the brake controller wiring kit # 5506. I have attached two help articles on installing a brake controller for you to check out.

To install the P3, you will need to find a dedicated stop light circuit. I recommend using a circuit tester to find the wire that only has power when the brake pedal is pressed at the stop light switch. Since your truck has air brakes, this switch may not be at the brake pedal where it is typically found on vehicles without air brakes. If you are unable to find the stop light switch, I recommend contacting International Trucks with your VIN and they may be able to tell you where you can find a dedicated stop light switch.
