Do I Need To Swap The Side Plates On The Curt Receiver Of My 1993 VW Eurovan To Switch To a Class 3?

Question:

Can the Curt 13217 receiver assembly be mounted to Curt 12217 side plates? I had a 12217 1 1/4 trailer hitch mounted to my 2000 Eurovan camper and removed the receiver assembly easily to install a 13217 2, and would prefer to keep the 12217 side plates if they fit the 13217 receiver assembly to avoid removing the 12217 side plates and installing the 13217 side plates. They look very simila. Ill only be carrying a bike rack with two bikes at most for a combined weight of 100 lbs. No trailering or towing at all. Thanks.

You will need to change out the side plates from your class II Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C12217 to install the class III Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # 13217 on your 1993 Volkswagen Eurovan. While they do appear similar the side plates are different as they are designed with larger and stronger components.
