How to Determine Brake, Running, and Turn Signal Lights, on a 2001 Lexus RX300
Question:
I have a question about how to find out which wire is the signal, brake and stop light for a 2001 lexus rx300. It is a single light bulb with 3 wires. The turn signal has its own bulb. Please help.

To determine which wire, control the turn signals, brake lights, and running lights it is best to use a circuit tester, part # PTW2993, and test each wire to see what function it controls. If possible is it nice to have another person help you with this and operate the turn signals, lights, and brakes.
First you must locate the vehicle wiring system. In most vehicles this can be found behind the drivers side cargo area near the tail lights, please consult your owners manual for the exact location for your vehicle. Then test one function at a time. For example the running lights (while on), start by probing the connector points and determine which wire is for the running lights. If your tester indicates that you have found the proper connection point turn the lights on and off to confirm this is the correct wire.
Once you have identified which wire is the running lights you can then label it or proceed to hook it up to your preferred wiring harness. Then continue to test and identify the brake lights and turn signals using the same method.
If you are looking to install a trailer hitch receiver the # 41541 would work for your 2001 Lexus. In addition to the hitch receiver you will need a ball mount, ball, pin and clip, and a wiring harness to complete the towing package. I would recommend the # 989900 kit to cover all of these items.
Additionally a compatible wiring harness for this vehicle if you do not have a factory installed tow package is the Kit # C59236. Which includes a tester and quick splices for easy installation. It is also recommended to use Dielectric Grease # 11755, on all of your electrical connections to prevent corrosion, it can also be used on bulbs, sockets and t-connectors.
If you do have a factory installed tow package the Tow Ready Custom Fit Harness # 118245, would also work great. Again, Dielectric Grease # 11755 is recommended on the electrical connections.
