My suggestion is to consider taking the opportunity to upgrade to tankless system. I suggest the Furrion Tankless Water Heater, # FR68SR as this would be close in dimensions to what you have including door size, which is 18"x18". This is designed to replace 4 - 6 gallon water heaters and has a wall mounted controller. The tankless design has a heating capacity of 2.4 gallons per minute with a vortex system that mixes hot and cold water to eliminate fluctuations and reduce the risk of hot water scalding. This provides an instantaneous and consistent supply of hot water without having to wait for a tank to fill. With this 60,000 BTU capacity it heats water fast, even when temperatures are very low. It has dual over temperature sensors that automatically shut the power off if the water temperature exceeds a safe limit and, has a safety valve that vents at 87 PSI to prevent excess pressure and heat build up. The dimensions are, overall, 19-3/16" deep x 12-5/8" tall x 12-13/16" wide with an access door of 18-1/8" tall x 18-1/8" wide.

Some adjustment to your specific door opening may need to be made. We do recommend that installation and service be performed by a qualified installer, service agency, or gas supplier.
