How to Determine if a Larger Tire Size Can Be Used on a Trailer

Question:

I currently have ST225/75r15 tires on my dexter 5200 dual axle cargo trailer. Ive already put a lift on the trailer, now Im looking to gain a little more axle clearance. What is the tallest tire I can safely put on my trailer? Thanks

Choosing the correct replacement tire/wheel will depend on a few things. First, and most importantly, will be the tire clearance.

The standard ST225/75R15, like the Westlake # LHWL304, will have a diameter of 28.3 inches and you will need to have at least 3 inches from the top of the tire to the bottom of fender. The Kenda Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire with 16" Aluminum Wheel - 6 on 5-1/2 - Load Range E # AM32734 will have a diameter of 31.6 inches, so you will need to make sure something like this will keep the needed clearance.

You will also want to make sure you have around 1-1/2 inches from the back of the tire to sidewall/frame of the trailer. You do have some wiggle room for this measurement, but the # LHWL304 (as an example again) will have a width of 8.8 inches and the # AM32734 will be wider at 9.37 inches. Again, this measurement is not as important as the height clearance, but you also do not want the tire hitting the side of the trailer frame.

So if you have the room, the Kenda # AM32734 will get you some more height.
