Weight Distribution System Recommendation for a 6000 lb Trailer Towed by a 2003 Ford Explorer

Question:

Just bought a V8 AWD 03 Explorer with towing package. Has a 7000lb limit. Need recommendation for a ball attachment and wt distribution assembly to pull a 20-25foot rental camper trailer, around 6000 lbs. What do I get for proper ball size, tongue height, sway, braking, etc? Thanks.

The first item that we will want to look at is a weight distribution system. The key to choosing the correct weight distribution system is knowing the total tongue weight of your towing setup. The tongue weight of your towing setup will include the tongue weight of your trailer when it is fully loaded and ready to tow plus the weight of any cargo loaded in your Explorer behind the rear axle.

The tongue weight of a travel trailer is typically calculated to be 10 to 15 percent of the trailers gross weight, but I strongly recommend finding the tongue weight of your trailer since it could be different. I have attached an FAQ article on how to determine your trailers tongue weight for you to check out.

Once you find the tongue weight of your trailer, I recommend looking at the Reese Steadi-Flex weight distribution systems. These systems have integrated sway control and they include adjustable shanks that allow you to tow your trailer level. I have attached a product review video of the Reese Steadi-Flex systems for you to check out as well as a link to all of our Reese systems.

The included shank has a maximum drop of 1-1/4 inches and a maximum rise of 6 inches. If you think you will need a shank with a larger drop or rise, we do offer other weight distribution shanks (see link). You can determine the proper drop or rise that you will need by measuring. With your Explorer and trailer on level ground, make sure your trailer is level. Measure from the ground to the to the bottom of your trailer coupler, then from the ground to the top of your trailer hitch receiver on your Explorer.

If the hitch height is greater than the coupler height, then the difference is the drop that you will need. If the coupler height is greater than the hitch height, then the difference is the rise.

Once you know your tongue weight, you can simply choose the system that can support the tongue weight of your setup. If you find that your tongue weight is between 600 lbs and 1,200 lbs, then I would recommend looking at the Steadi-Flex System, # RP66560.

Another thing to keep in mind is that these systems do not include a hitch ball. The size of the hitch ball will be determined by your trailer. The coupler of your trailer will require a specific size hitch ball, either a 2 inch ball or a 2-5/16 inch ball. Based on the size of your trailer, you probably need a 2 inch hitch ball, but I would verify the size before purchasing a hitch ball. For a 2 inch hitch ball, you can use part # A-90. For a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball, use part # 19286.

Finally, I have attached an FAQ article on weight distribution systems for you to check out. If you are new to weight distribution systems, this article will a lot of helpful information.
