Troubleshooting Tekonsha Voyager Causing Grabbing Trailer Brakes When Coming To A Slow Stop
Question:
Hi, I have a 10+ year old Tekonsha Voyager installed in my 2003 Ford F350. I just bought a 24ft Nash trailer dry weight of 4900 lbs, GVW of 7000 lbs. After adjusting the Tekonsha Voyager with the trailer, at slow speeds, like coming to a stop for a stop sign, the trailer brakes grab. I readjusted the Tekonsha Voyager and no luck. My question is, should I buy a newer electric brake controller and if so which one? Thanks for your help.

I am sorry to hear that!
The Tekonsha Voyager you have was a great controller for its time, but it is not unheard of for the internal pendulum to have a non-repairable issue which can cause the exacty grabbing brake sensation when braking. Typically this happens when at slow speeds coming to a stop like you mentioned.
If you have a buddy that has a vehicle with a trailer brake controller that you can hook your trailer up to and do a test drive I would try that as that will tell you if there is an issue with the brakes on your new trailer, or if the controller is to blame.
Should you find the issues is indeed the controller I recommend upgrading to the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 which uses a more modern accelerometer for smoother, more reliable braking. This controller will use the same harness your current controller uses.
I included a video of the # 90195 for you to take a look at.
