Snow Tire Chains or Cables For 2019 Subaru Outback With 225/60-18 Tires

Question:

Looking for something to keep in my Subaru Outback for occasional use. I live in the south and will only need chains/cables when we take winter trips to the mountains 1-2 times a year max and it happens to snow. Flat ground driving I’m not worried about chains, just climbing steep roads to ski resorts. The Subaru is noted for excellent winter driving. But they may be considering winter tires when they make that statement as well. Looking for inexpensive options with the best clearance for my vehicle. I know the owner manual actually states to avoid chains. If clearances are the same I am assuming the chains would be more useful and longer lasting.

That's a really good question, and your assumption about chains being better than cables is right on for your 2019 Subaru Outback with 225/60-18 tires. Cables are really just for emergency use, and realistically only able to be used once or twice, so if you aren't sure you will really be using them, or don't mind buying another set yearly, then it is fine to go with the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains # PW1046.

Having said that, I do highly recommend going with a specific set of chains for your 2019 Outback with 225/60-18 tires; I'll link the option for you and explain why below:

- Konig Self-Tensioning, Low-Profile Snow Tire Chains # TH2004205105

These chains only require 9 mm of clearance, while the cables actually require 37 mm of clearance, so they are lower profile. More importantly though, these chains are also going to last longer than cables, give you much better traction, are a lot easier to put on, and offer protection for your Outback's rims, which cables do not. The difference is, of course, they cost more initially.

The Konig chains # TH2004205105 have a 5-year warranty, which is years longer than most chains, and far longer than the 90-day warranty of the cables, which is just one example of the quality difference. They are also a D-link diamond pattern, which is what gives you the best traction, and self-tensioning for a simple install.
