5th Wheel Trailer Hitch and Installation Kit for a 2012 Ford F-150 Crew Cab w/5-1/2 Foot Bed

Question:

Hi, I have 2012 ford F 150 rated to tow 9,300 lbs. The rear axle GAWR is 3,850 lbs. What is the max hitch weight i should be looking at. It is a short box 5.5 box super crew cab with Eco-Boost. I know I will need a sliding 5th wheel.

If the rear gross axle weight rating is 3,850 pounds, you need to stay below that. Allowing a little cushion room would be ideal. If it were me I would look at no more than 3,500 pounds.

You actually cannot use a sliding 5th wheel hitch. On a 5-1/2 foot bed you HAVE to use a stationary hitch and a Sidewinder to get the extra clearance needed to make tight turns.

First you will need an installation kit. You can use # RP50081-58. I have linked the instructions and a video showing a typical installation for you. With this kit installed the center of the hitch jaws will be 1-1/2 inches forward of the center of the rear axle. Measure from that point in your truck forward to the back of the cab. Then add 22 inches for the Sidewinder.

This measurement must be 4 inches or more than half the width of the 5th wheel trailer overhang to safely make 90 degree turns. The 22 inches is the extension of the Sidewinder. To determine if there is a Sidewinder that will fit the trailer you find you will need to get the model number and manufacturer of the pin box. This is normally on a sticker or plate on the pin box. Then compare this to the information in our FAQ on Sidewinders I have linked for you.

For a hitch with a more secure jaw design (more king pin contact) go with hitch # RP30047. It is rated for 16,000 pounds and 4,000 pounds pin weight.
