Drawtite Activator IV Brake Controller Troubleshooting, Only . on Display

Question:

I have a Drawtite Activator IV brake controller. It has been installed in my truck for quite a while without any problems. Now it does not matter if the trailer is hooked up or not, all I get is a dot when applying the brake pedal or pushing the manual brake control. I tried it on different trailers with the same result. All it does is display the dot.

It sounds like there is a problem on the brake output circuit. I checked the installation instructions for the Draw-Tite Activator IV Trailer Brake Controller # 5504 and what you described is a no-connection situation on the brake output circuit.

Since you determined that the problem is on the tow vehicle the problem could be anywhere from the wiring of the brake controller or the wiring from the controller to the 7-way. I would recommend you check the condition of the wiring looking for shorts and fix as necessary.

I would start with the trailer connectors. Most likely there is corrosion in the connectors and should be cleaned.

I have attached a FAQ article on troubleshooting brake controllers for you to check out also.
