Comparing the Tekonsha P2 Brake Controller # 90885 to the P3 # 90195 for a 2013 Toyota Tacoma

Question:

I have a 2013 Tacoma TRD with the tow package. Can you recommend a brake controller for me? Whats the difference btwn the Prodigy P-2 and P-3? Recommended mounting location? Thanks

The P2 # 90885 and P3 # 90195 brake controllers would both be good choices for a 2013 Toyota Tacoma, but the P3 is going to give you more features and customization options. The P3 is basically an upgraded version of the P2 with a display and controls that are more user-friendly.

While the P2 will show error codes when there is a wiring issue, the P3 will display a readout that gives you a more detailed description of what is happening, instead of just giving you a code you must then look up in the manual. You also have the option of personalizing the color on the P3 display screen.

The P3 works well if you have multiple trailers, since it has 5 presets you can save, so you would not need to set the controller up again each time you switched trailers.

Otherwise, both units have 360 degree mounting ranges, both work for trailers with up to 8 brakes, and both can be installed using plug-in wiring adapter # 3040-P. If your truck has a factory 7-Way installed, you would be able to use the adapter to plug either brake controller directly into your factory brake control port, located above the emergency brake pedal on the driver side.

I am including links to the installation instructions for both brake controllers and the wiring adapter, and also a typical installation video and some FAQs for you to reference. Normally, the brake controllers get mounted to the bottom of the dash, near where your right knee sits while you are driving. This way, it's within easy reach of the driver but is in a location where you won't bang your knee against it when entering or exiting the vehicle.
