Is It Normal for a Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack to Have Movement While Driving
Question:
Hi, I have a 76046-SK hitch installed on my Chrysler Pacifica hybrid, using it to mount a 4-bike rack. The rack Im using is here Thule-T2-Pro-XT-4-Bike-Hitch-Rack. The rack by itself weighs 96lbs, and the bikes are around under 30lbs each. The weight combined would be around 200lbs, but the rack sticks back quite a way. My understanding is that the hitch is rated for 675lbs of tongue weight. Ive noticed that the hitch receiver flexes slightly - there is ~0.5inch of movement between the receiver and the bumper, and the entire rack bounces a bit travelling over bumps. Is this flex/deflection of the receiver from the bumper expected? Or is the weight of the bike rack in combination of being cantilevered out too much for this hitch? Thanks for your help!

It's normal for there is be movement with a hitch mounted accessory while driving but the hitch itself should not be moving. I recommend checking the hardware and looking over the hitch itself. The best way to help provide support and reduce movement is with a simple cam buckle strap, the Curt Cam Buckle Stabilizing Strap for Hitch-Mounted Accessories part # 18050. There are also built-in stabilization devices already on most bike racks.
