How To Convert 4-Way Trailer Connector On 2012 Toyota Highlander To a 7-Way
Question:
What wiring is needed to connect the 4 prong plug with a 7 prong plug and does it need to be installed to run the length of the vehicle to be installed on the drivers side under the dash board? What are the item numbers that need to be ordered to complete this installation?

In order to convert the four way trailer connector on a 2012 Toyota Highlander to a seven way trailer connector you simply need an adapter. The correct adapter will be based on whether or not the trailer has brakes. If there are no brakes simply use the Adapter 4-Pole to 7-Pole and 4-Pole part # 37185. If there are brakes simply use the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller part # ETBC7 and then a brake controller of your choice. I recommend the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller part # TK90160.
In regards to the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller, the blue wire will run under the dash (brake output) and the black wire will run to the battery (charge line).
