why do some of the larger thule cargo boxes say I need a T-track adapter.

You will be able to use either the T-Track Adapter # TH27PQ or the provided clamps with the Thule roof mounted cargo boxes.

The adapter is just another way of mounting the cargo box to your Thule rails. Some may find this way of mounting better for a more secure long term mount as it does not have the exposed legs that clamp around the crossbars.
