Are Safety Chains Required when Using a Reese Goosebox 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Adapter
Question:
I wrote Reese to ask about safety chains since the Goose Box is a form of a gooseneck hitch but no place to attach safety chains. The only response I receive is RV use - not required. Thats acceptable but how would I possibly explain that to an officer should he question it? Is there a difference in design from a standard gooseneck hitch or is the RV exemption sufficient? The general consensus on the RV boards is if its a ball, it needs chains. I attach the breakaway cable to one of the safety chain attachment points. Since its an RV does the break away switch replace the chains? Just trying to stay safe and legal.

Safety chains are always a good idea whether they are required or not. Basically, you need to check with the local and state laws where you will be traveling to determine the safety chain requirements. Normally, 5th wheel trailers do not require safety chains but it can get a little convoluted when you introduce an adapter into the equation.
As far as where to connect chains when using a Goosebox if there is an unused bolt hole you can get a quick link in, like # C82932, that is one option.
