Will Blue Ox SwayPro BXW1500 Work With Trailer That Has 500lbs Tongue Weight?

Question:

I orders the Blue Ox weight distribution and Pro sway 1500 and my trailer says it has a 500 lb tongue weight is that going to be a problem?

Since your trailer only has 500lbs of tongue weight, the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control - Clamp On - 15,000 lbs GTW, 1,500 lbs TW # BXW1500 you ordered will be quite a bit overrated, and will cause a very stiff ride.

First things first you will want to confirm the total tongue weight of your setup, as the tongue weight you mentioned is likely the unloaded tongue weight.

Total tongue weight is the tongue weight of your fully loaded trailer plus the weight of any cargo stored behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. The easiest way to get an accurate tongue weight measurement is with a tongue weight scale like the etrailer # e99044, but there are other methods outlined in the included video.

Since you mentioned 500lbs tongue weight, your setup is probably closer to 700lbs tongue weight when fully loaded.

If that is the case then the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control - 10,000 lbs GTW, 1,000 lbs TW # EQ37100ET which works with total tongue weights between 600-700lbs would be my recomendation as it has industry leading 4-point sway control to force your trailer to stay straight going down the highway, and is a top of the line hitch. This hitch includes a 2-5/16" hitch ball, but if your trailer uses the smaller 2" hitch ball you will need the # A-90.

If you find your setup has a different total tongue weight, just let me know.

I included videos of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
