Troubleshooting Sliding Issues With A Manual Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch
Question:
1. Must I landing gear to operate subject B and W slide? Several years ago I purchased a Reese Elite RP30144, 18K Slider from you and always must Landing Gear to take wt. off hitch in order to operate slide. Then, frequently have trouble slipping the pin into the locking position after the slide has moved backwards for maneuvering and again when slide moves forward to driving position. Now, Im looking for a manual slider that will slide properly without needing to landing gear. 5th wheel max. tongue wt. 2290 lbs. 2. Will Pin Box clear truck Tail Gate with slide in maneuvering position?

You shouldn't be using your landing gear to take the pressure off of the sliding 5th wheel hitch. You will unlock the slider putting it into the maneuvering position and pull forward which will allow the hitch to slide back and offer you a wider turning clearance. If you're having issues locking it back into place after maneuvering then you're not fully in place and can just back up a few feet to get it in the correct position to lock. Since you've had your sliding hitch for a while you can use a silicone spray lubricant to grease the track and improve the sliding ability.
The B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w Slider for Ford Towing Prep Package - Dual Jaw - 20K # BWRVK3370 is a confirmed fit for your 2017 Ford F-350 Super Duty with 6-3/4' bed with OEM prep package. Without knowing the height of your tailgate and the pin box you have to check the measurements I won't know for sure if it will clear the tail gate. The easiest and quickest way to determine this would be to leave your tailgate down and hookup and then slide the hitch all the back you'll be able to see if the pin box comes into the space where the tailgate will be.
If you don't want to have to get out of your truck to unlock the hitch and set it sliding mode then you can use the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Hitch w/ Slider - Single Jaw - Ford Super Duty Prep Package - 21K # DM8550038. This hitch has an autoslide feature which will provide the clearance required for your short-bed pickup to turn safely at slow speeds automatically. This hitch will also drop right into your Ford puck system for easy install and removal.
