Recommended Base Plate, Tow Bar and Accessories for Flat Towing 2009 Mini Cooper Base
Question:
I just want to make sure this is the correct model for my 2009 mini. It is the base model, 2 door, 6 speed manual transmission. I would also like to order a non binding tow bar, brake system, and a light kit. We want to flat tow behind our motor home. I appreciate any help you can give.

If your Mini Cooper is the base hardtop, you'll want to use the Blue Ox # BX1304 you'd looked at. For a convertible, use # BX1306.
For a non-binding tow bar, I'd recommend the etrailer SD Non-Binding Tow Bar, part # e47ZR which is self aligning. You won't need to have the Mini Cooper perfectly aligned behind the motorhome to hook up. Attach the arms and drive away. The arms will self align as you pull away. The tow bar is fully compatible with the Blue Ox base plates mentioned above and include safety cables.
For a taillight wiring solution, I'd recommend a bulb and socket kit like the Roadmaster # RM-152-LED-7. This allows the flat towing taillight functions to remain completely independent from the vehicle's taillight functions.
I really like portable braking systems like the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR. The system won't require a time consuming and expensive installation, and only takes a few minutes to install (even less, once you become familiar with the process). A portable system also allows you to relocate the system to a different vehicle should you replace the Mini Cooper at some time in the future.
Finally, if the 13.5 inch installed height of the base plates (assuming the vehicle uses the stock tire size and is at factory ride height) has a more than 3 inch +/- height difference from the receiver height on the motorhome, you'll need a high/low adapter to bring the height difference within 3 inches. I'll link to an article that shows how to measure this, as well as to a listing of our available adapters.
