The 2017 Ford Escape isn't factory prewired for a brake controller, so the controller would need to be hardwired. The procedure isn't terribly difficult and we have videos and articles that will help walk you through the process.
Assuming that your Escape already has the 4 pole trailer connector installed, you'll also need the # 90885 Prodigy P2 brake controller and our # ETBC7 brake controller install kit. The kit includes the adapter to convert the existing 4 pole connector into a 7-way, as well as all the necessary wire, hardware and circuit breakers needed to complete the installation.
The Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controller, part # C51180 would be an easier installation that would require less wiring. The Echo features a sending unit that plugs into the trailer connector which allows you to control the braking action of the trailer from the passenger cab of the Escape with your smart phone. To get it installed, you'd use a different install kit, part # ETBC7L which also includes the adapter mentioned above and the wire and circuit breaker you'll need for the only wiring connection to the vehicle's positive battery terminal for a much quicker and simpler installation.
As mentioned above, I've linked to some install videos and an article about the install kit that you might find helpful.
